Shows of the week: Katy Perry, Kid Rock, Warped Tour

Katy Perry

If “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” hits No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, which is looking pretty likely, Perry will have tied a record held by Michael Jackson since his ’80s prime for the most chart-topping singles from a single album – “Teenage Dream” in her case, “Bad” in his. She has had the biggest-selling single of the year so far and was, in fact, the only artist with two singles on the midyear Top 10 chart released by Nielsen SoundScan, with “E.T.” at No. 1 and “Firework” at No. 10. That’s after having last year’s biggest-selling single, “California Gurls,” a song that pretty much defined the summer for people who listen to Top 40 radio. In other words, you could be looking at the biggest pop show of the summer here. | Katy Perry’s best songs

Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow

He seemed like a bit of a novelty act when he first swaggered onto the national stage in 1999 with a rap-rocking breakthrough called “Bawitaba,” but Kid Rock, now 40, has proven himself a surprisingly resilient rock-and-roll survivor. The Detroit rocker hit the mainstream hard in 2002 with a heartfelt Sheryl Crow duet called “Picture” and returned to rule the summer of 2007 with “All Summer Long,” a breezy Warren Zevon-Lynyrd Skynyrd mash-up. His latest album, “Born Free,” finds an older, wiser Kid Rock “chasing Father Time” through a sturdy collection of old-school rock-and-roll songs steeped in country, blues and soul, with Rick Rubin (whose credits range from early hip-hop classics to late-career triumphs by the likes of Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond and Tom Petty) producing. He’s touring with Crow, who was featured along with Bob Seger on “Collide,” the Kid’s most recent single. | Interview: Kid Rock
